Akari's story - No.2

We have already been publishing our serialized account in The Pet Club every month for more 3 years.

But the world keeps consolidating...consolidating...consolidating;
and the Hiroshima edition of The Pet Club has been forced, for various reasons, to end its many years of publication.

To the owners and dogs that helped us to gather material for many years:
Thank you very much.

I want to take this opportunity to express my appreciation.

I am full of gratitude to the many people who read the moving experiences on this home page every single day.

The following are some unedited contributions we received from owners, which we were planning to publish in The Pet Club.
Every month, after editing them, we published the contributions that we had received.

We are so happy that Akari has become well!

Mr. Okawa

I feel that the rainy season is almost upon us. I am happy that you are doing well, Mr. Okawa.

Concerning articles for publication in The Pet Club,
I jotted down the title and other information, just as they came to my mind, but I will leave it to you to change the title appropriately and organize the contents.

As for the pictures and my signature, I will get them to you before the deadline,
so would you please wait a little longer?

~I hope that all the people in the areas damaged by the earthquake and their cats and dogs will soon find themselves in happier circumstances again.~

『Her eye color changes the way it used to! 』

● Dog's name: Akari 11 years old female

● How I came to own her - how we met

1. February 26, 1996
"The babies have arrived: two of them, a male and a female."

2. One month later, a day before the owner went home, I took the "girl puppy" and became her mother.
A week after that, I named her Akari.

3. She had a wonderful time playing outdoors in the country during her first year and was adored by the neighbors.

● If you have any special episodes...

1. In the spring of 1998, I was tremendously busy with my job and was concentrating on working with some documents, so I cut down on walks and my hours of sleep.

"Mother's busy now. No!"
Three or 4 days after this, she sat on top of my papers; the next day, she sat on top of my computer, and what she did next was to sit on my knees and refuse to budge.
Not much later, when I came home, I found a very watery bowel movement in the front hall.

When I took her to a pet clinic after she had had diarrhea for 4 days, the vet told me, "Mother, please play with Akari."

The stress felt by a pet dog that goes two weeks without being patted by its owner...

2. It seems that someone who disliked dogs kicked Akari when she was little, but in spite of that, she loved people.
When she was a year and a half old, someone kicked her right in front of me, so hard that she yelped, and she lost her trust in people.

3. During an 11 year period, I took in 6 dogs. Three of them went to new owners, and 3 went to foster homes. She was a really good girl, who acted as mother to them, or as a sister, and always took good care of those rescued dogs.

4. She had imaginary pregnancies and "gave birth," and I found her taking care of a stuffed toy as if it were her own baby. The first time this happened, I was astonished and rushed her to the hospital.

5. She combined "crime prevention patrolling and trash pick-up" while taking walks and organized the "Doggy Patrol."

●The disease: When did you first notice the symptoms?

About 2 months ago, when she was 11 years and 3 months old.

● Please describe your pet's condition at the time. (details of the illness)
1. When I dropped a treat from above her head, she used to be able to snap it up in mid-air nearly 100% of the time.
It was about 2 ½ months ago that I noticed her failing to catch the treat.

2. Just around that time, I became aware that her eyes were no longer changing color.
(When the angle of her sight changed even a little, her usual eye
color would turn into 3 colors.)

● How did you come to know about Pinfenon?
1. She had a middle ear inflammation in the spring of last year (1 year and 3 months ago) and was taking medicine from the pet clinic, but whenever I stopped giving her the medicine, the symptoms returned. This happened several times and the inflammation was never cured.

2. While searching for "middle ear infections in dogs" on the Internet, I discovered a very easy-to-understand home page with so many informative articles!

There, I found Pinfenon.

● Daily dosage: 4 pills, given 2 pills at a time, morning and evening
● How long have you been giving it? 11 days
● When did you notice an improvement? The 9th day.

● Details of pet's condition
1. Her eyes, which had ceased to show changes in color, began to change again on the 9th day.

(When the angle of her sight changed even a little, her usual eye
color of near-black would turn green, grey and pale yellow.)

I noticed something else, too:
Her stools became practically odorless.

2. On the 3rd day after beginning Pinfenon, there was a spring in her legs.

There was something jaunty in her walk.
She jumped into the car and moved around in it easily...
I didn't have to carry her out of it.
Things like that.

3. As for the ear inflammation, right now I am giving medicine to her along with Pinfenon, but pretty soon, I plan to switch to just giving Pinfenon and see how things turn out.

4. She was lame for 3 days, starting with New Year's Day, and since then, the same thing has happened again once in a while.
I want to wait a little longer and see what happens with this lameness, too.

5. It was also mentioned that Pinfenon was effective against dementia, so I would like to give it to her as a preventative measure.

6. Instead of depending on medicine and Pinfenon alone, I am also preparing meals for my dog with the help of the meals for old dogs mentioned on Scarecrow's home page, using ingredients that are safe even for human consumption.

※ In the beginning I was giving her Pinfenon order to strengthen her resistance and cure the middle ear inflammation; and then right away, her legs, which had begun to weaken, got better.
I was having thoughts like, "Her eyes have stopped changing color these days..."

I was having these idle thoughts, when it came to me that she might have had the beginnings of cataracts and now her condition had improved.
