[Breed of pet] Miniature Dachshund
[Name used for pet] Sam, 9 years old

[Pet's state of health]

He has dermatitis and loose hip joints due to advancing age, but has a very good appetite, and is lively. However, he is losing muscle tissue.

[Things you want to know about pets]
Managing the diet and health of a senior dog

[Owner's wish] To relieve dermatitis

[Number of meals per day] 2
[Amount fed at each meal] 40 grams
[Snacks and their amount, apart from meals] A small amount

[Food content]
Morning: Yoshioka Yuryo's Senior Fish Food
Evening: Homemade meal--One of the following: raw meat [horsemeat, mutton, chicken, venison, tuna, bonito, or the like] + brown rice + hatomugi (adlay), sobamai (a kind of buckwheat) or black beans or adzuki beans, 5~8 kinds of vegetables, brewer's yeast, calcium, and vegetable oil, etc.) 140 Kcals
Snacks: Daikon radish or carrots or apples, etc. (vegetables and fruit that are in the
house)

[Does your pet presently have any diseases (details of symptoms and vet's diagnosis)?]
He has dermatitis, an itchy rash on places such as his hips, under his forelegs, his neck and hindquarters.
He is all right so long as he is taking medicine, but within a month or two of stopping it, the rash comes back with little pustules.
Just now, the vet has me giving him medicine twice a day and shampooing him with Nolvasan every three days.

[If your pet has any diseases at present, when did they begin?]

[Medicine and supplements currently being given]
Antibiotics and an antihistamine

[Please also tell us of any worries or concerns you have.]
I am worried about her medicine losing its effectiveness as she continues taking it
over and over, and that then the dosage will have to be increased and she may suffer
from its side effects.
I am also afraid that, at her age, she may develop more diseases!

[What sort of food are you thinking of feeding your pet from now on?]
Homemade food. I have to give her dog food in the mornings, but I would like it to be
something safe, with no additives.

●Message written after giving Pinfenon for 1 month
October 16, 2006

As snacks I give her homemade jerky or a raw bone or small amounts of things like fruit or vegetables.

With the turn of the season, her skin becomes dry and itchy.
When that happens, I always go to the hospital for antibiotics and something to ease the itching. The vet has instructed me to wash her with medicinal shampoos often. She was diagnosed as having loosening hip joints, due to her advanced age.

After the Pinfenon came...

She wouldn't eat it as is, so I got her to eat it by mixing 2 pills into her food in the morning and in the evening.
At some point--I don't know exactly when--I realized that the dryness was gone and she was scratching less frequently.

Once she began to itch, I would end up taking her to the hospital every week, but 3 weeks after she started on Pinfenon, the vet told me to stop giving her the medicine and just keep an eye on her at home.

It has been quite some time since she stopped taking the medicine, but she doesn't have any itching.
Another thing is that her bowels were weak, and whenever something unusual happened, she would go from passing soft stools to having diarrhea; but since taking Pinfenon, her stools have become firm the way they were when she was young.

Thank you.
