Peculiar voice due to dementia has been cured! (Veterinarian's report)

As stated in an article on the Web site LOVERY PET PARK, which provides useful information for pets and other animals, as well as miscellaneous facts and stories of experiences, mixes involving Japanese dog breeds may have a tendency to suffer from dementia.

Pet dog Shiro (mixed breed) at Takahashi Animal Hospital in Gunma Prefecture was fifteen years old and suffering from age-related dementia and heart disease.

His/Her symptoms included going round and round chasing his/her tail, letting out weird cries during the night, and bouts of severe coughing.
I was treating him/her with an ACE inhibitor (a blood pressure medication that employs vasodilation to improve the circulation), in hopes of lessening the symptoms, but with not too much success.

Then we tried giving him/her Pinfenon, while observing his/her blood platelet aggregation figures (a measurement of blood viscosity).

The first time I saw Shiro, I thought, "Whoa!" I really wondered if Pinfenon would work for him/her...
His/Her platelet aggregation value was +3. (The average for this value is zero, so the value for Shiro's blood was extremely elevated, meaning his/her blood was thick like mud.)
I thought, "Oh, boy, this dog is in dangerous condition! This is going to be hard!"

First, to evaluate his/her response to Pinfenon S, I began treatment with two pills a day...

Platelet agglutinability: a little over +2
He/She still has spells of severe coughing and trouble breathing, but the bouts of circling round and round have abated somewhat.
I feel so sorry for Shiro when I see his/her teary eyes.
※ I tried upping the dose of Pinfenon S to four pills once a day.

October 12, 2004

Platelet agglutinability: +2
His/Her coughing spells and trouble breathing seem to come a bit less frequently.
He/She is also going round and round less often.
Good for you! Hang in there, Shiro!
I have increased the Pinfenon S to six pills.

Platelet agglutinability: a little over +1
Less coughing than before.
※ Still giving six pills of Pinfenon S.

November 28, 2004

Platelet agglutinability: +1
That weird voice, his or her weird crying, has really stopped!
※ Continuing to give six pills of Pinfenon S.

Platelet agglutinability: +1
Considering his/her former condition, the improvement is undeniable!
The going round and round and the weird crying have changed!
We are so happy that Shiro has a great present for Christmas!
Thank you so much, too, Shiro!
Always stay healthy, okay?
